'The Bike Shop' closing

The Bike Shop, a program that for nearly five years has paired city kids with bikes, weekend rides and maintenance education, is closing at the end of October due to space and funding constraints.

The Bike Shop is located in Kennedy Park. It serves about 500 kids each year, mostly from the surrounding neighborhood. It has an agreement with Portland Housing Authority to operate in a small space there, and notified that organization this week about its plans to close. Velguth said the Alliance for Transportation Choice – the nonprofit set up to run the bike program – voted Sept. 29 to cease operating as of Oct. 31.
