The Big Waste of '08
I had overheard someone talking about this, and both the Phoenix and Bollard picked up on it (with same photo) - Whole Foods Market's trashing dumpster loads of food after the ice storm. I assumed a company as sophisticated as Whole Foods would have some back up generators, but apparently not. Perhaps it is cheaper to just claim the loss on your insurance and throw it all out instead of having a back-up power system. But as both articles point out, you would expect a company like Whole Foods would try to avoid wasting so much food. While some of the food did go to Wayside Food Kitchen, it appears the bulk of it went off to ...., uh where ever our waste goes.
