"Seven cars were set on fire in the Portland peninsula early this morning, including one vehicle that ignited a nearby apartment house on Sherman Street, forcing an evacuation.
Police Lt. Robert Ridge said no one was injured in any of the fires, which occurred over a span of about an hour and a half. He said police had no suspects and were still looking for whoever set the cars ablaze.
The first fire was reported at 4:04 a.m. and the last about 6:40 a.m. Three of the cars were parked on Sherman Street, one on Cumberland Avenue, one on High Street and one on Park Street near Stetson Court.
Ridge said a car that was torched at 141 Sherman St. was parked close to an apartment house at that address, setting the building on fire. Firefighters called in a second alarm to put out that blaze and got all the residents out of the building safely.
