Ugly Design Wins

The Phoenix has more photos and a link to the guy's website (view at your own risk).
"Venezuelan artist Jaime Gili's design for Sprague Energy Oil Tanks was chosen for Maine's largest public art project, Art All Around, it was announced today.

Gili, who lives in London, was chosen from 560 entries that came from 73 countries worldwide, including Italy, Australia, Thailand, Spain and France. The announcement was made at Mercy Hospital's new building, which looks out on the 16 tanks that Gili's work will adorn.

The Maine Center for Creativity, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the creative economy, spearheaded the project and will lead the fund raiser for the remaining $1.2 million that will pay for the project over the next three years, said Jean Maginnis, founder and executive director of the center.

Gili received a $20,000 prize and will see his work on a public canvas next to the Fore River. The sides of eight oil tanks and the tops of eight others will offer Gili 261,000 square feet to show his modern art work. The space represents the largest space for public art ever developed at a Maine industrial site."

I didn't really care for any of the finalists designs, but at least this one is colorful in a nice way. Wonder what they will paint next?

Hopefully it is not as bad as the Press Herald picture.
