Franklin Arterial History

The Press Herald has some great photos going back to the 1920's showing the street that is now Franklin Arterial. There is also a presentation by Scott Hanson of the City's historic staff that provides a good history of the area.

For more information on the area, and plans to improve it, check out the Franklin Reclamation Authority (which is a citizens group).

There is a meeting this Wednesday on "Rethinking Portland's Gateway."
"In the late 1960s, city officials decided that the best way to revitalize downtown Portland was to make it easier for drivers to get there. So officials demolished a swath of neighborhoods and built a divided highway from Back Cove to the waterfront, creating Franklin Arterial."
